Literature Text

One day, a girl and a boy were sitting in the park, having a picnic. The girl's name was [Name] and the boy was called Emil. They were the best of friends.
Well, maybe it's because they didn't have any other friends.
[Name] was always the shy type, not wanting to start any conversation, and would rather wait for someone else to talk to her. Emil, on the other hand, had family friends that were a little too eccentric in his point of view.

Their friendship actually started on a rainy afternoon in elementary school, just a little while after being dismissed from class. [Name] was sitting on a bench, waiting for her mother to pick her up while holding an umbrella to protect her from the falling raindrops, and Emil was walking under the shade of his own umbrella, looking for his older brother.
Their eyes met when the boy turned and looked to his side, immediately catching her gaze. The [brunette/blonde/etc] girl seemed to be looking at him for quite some time with a confused look on her face.
He walked up to her and reached out a hand. Looking up at him with an even more puzzled look, she asked him why he put his hand in front of her. The silver haired boy sighed and said, "My name's Emil. Be my friend, alright?".
Startled, [eye colour] coloured eyes widened. "Me?"
The young Emil rolled his eyes. "You don't see anyone else around here, right?"
Nodding in understanding, [Name] took his hand and shook it with a smile. "I'll be glad to be your friend, Emil. My name is [Name]," she said.
From afar, Lukas couldn't help but let his lips curl upwards. "I'm glad little brother made a new friend," he thought.

Anyway, back to the present. The golden afternoon sun was slightly covered by puffy cumulus clouds that were gently floating across the sky. The warm, gentle breeze made the tree branches sway ever so slowly, leaves and flower petals softly fluttering all around.
Emil looked down at the puffin plush that his companion had given him on his birthday many years ago. Said friend was lying on the lush, green grass, getting a few leaves in her hair. She sat back up abruptly, causing a few of them to fly away in the wind, her [hair length] [hair colour] hair gently swaying.
"What's wrong?" the violet eye boy asked, concerned. "Is everything alright?"
Smiling sheepishly, she said in reply, "Nothing's wrong. Sorry for making you worry".
Despite her answer, the other couldn't help but doubt her words.

Looking at the children who were running and screaming, [Name] asked, "Hey, remember when we first met?".
Emil glanced at her, then stared down at his plush toy. "Yeah. What about it?"
The girl shook her head. "It's been a long time since then. We're already in college and all, yet we still have each other," she said.
A frown made its way to her friend's face. "Is that so?"
Not looking at Emil, [Name] said, "Yeah. Amazing, really".
"[Name]," he started. "Do you not need me anymore?" he asked, still looking down. He couldn't let her see his face for his eyes were filled with little hope of her still needing him by her side, and sadness. "Does she want to have more friends? Am I not enough for her?" he thought.
Because of the sudden question, [Name] snapped her head at him. "He doesn't want to be my friend anymore?" she thought. "After all we've been through? Well, maybe he wants to step out of our little friendship to meet new people," she added in her head.
Sighing, she answered, "No, Emil. I don't need you anymore".
Looking up at her, with a pained face, he said, "Oh. Alright". Without another word, he stood up, carrying his puffin with him, then walked away.
She tried to reach out to him, calling out so she could try to explain, but her efforts were deemed useless as he only ignored her and went away.
Sitting down, [Name] tried to sort out what had just happened. With a look of realisation, she mumbled, "Did I just misunderstand something?".

Days passed and the two rarely interacted. Only the side glances as they walked, and greetings when they saw each other were considered as such an interaction. These seemed to lessen every passing day, though. They had started to seem like passing strangers.

This did not go unnoticed, as Lukas had began to wonder why they never saw each other anymore. He had asked his brother what was wrong, and he would only look at him with pained eyes and run to his room. This made him decide that he should try a different approach.
The blond walked to [Name]'s house, as it was nearby. They lived a house away from each other, so there really wasn't much of a hassle trying to go there.

Upon knocking on the door, [Name] answered it. "Lukas?" she asked with a bit of surprise and confusion. "What are you doing here? You can explain once you get inside. Let me get you a cup of coffee, so make yourself at home," she said, stepping aside to let her guest in.

After a while of waiting and making himself comfortable on the couch, Lukas gratefully took the cup from [Name]. "Thank you," he said.
"No problem. Now, back to business. What brings you here on this fine Saturday afternoon?" she asked, sitting across from him. Almost immediately after the words left her mouth, it started to lightly drizzle outside, the pitter pattering getting louder by the second. "On this, rainy Saturday afternoon, I mean," she corrected.
"It's about Emil," he started, his voice ever so monotone. "He hasn't been very well since last month," he continued. "Do you know why?"
She shook her head. "I didn't know any of that was going on," she said. "What makes you think I know why he's been acting like that?"
"Every time I ask him what's wrong, he'd sometimes mumble your name and walk away," he explained.
[Name]'s eyes widened. "My name? Are you sure?"
The navy eyed male only nodded. "He looked hurt, too," he added. Sighing, he asked, "Can I tell you something?".
She nodded.
"Ever since the day you first met, Emil would always tell me about you, how his day was with you, and almost every conversation I had with him ended with at least one topic that was about you. Whenever he realised that he had a little bit too much to say about you, he would blush and tell me to just forget about what he said or something. It was cute, really. Anyway, you have to understand that he can't do much without you. His deportment grade even dropped by a bit, this month," he said, not missing a beat. Sighing and looking into [eye colour] eyes, he requested, "If you have the time, please sort out whatever it is that happened between the two of you. If it had anything to do with your friendship, he was probably just trying to make sure that you were happy with what both of you had".

The girl began to feel a little guilty. She really had misunderstood, after all. Emil just wanted to make sure of their friendship, and she had totally blew him off with a few words.
With a determined glint in her eyes, she said, "I will, Lukas. Thanks for the info, by the way".
Smiling a bit, the older man lifted a hand and ruffled her hair. "Great," he said.

"I am going to make things right," she thought. "And nobody's going to stop me from doing so!"

End.
For :iconroro0098:'s Misunderstanding Contest.
Not only is it short, but it even ends with an open ending!
